Why a league?
Most weekly five-a-side games stay one-offs: you play, you argue about it in the car, and by next week it is forgotten. A league table changes that — every match carries into the following week, and at the end of the season there is a champion nobody can dispute.
It is easier to set up than people think. All you need is fixed teams, a fixture list, and somewhere to write the points. PointSim takes care of the third.
002
Setting the league up
- Fix the teams. If sides are picked fresh every week, there is no league. Build at least four teams and keep the squads for the season.
- Write the fixtures in advance. With four teams a single round-robin takes three weeks, a double one six. Everyone playing everyone the same number of times is the whole point.
- A week is a round. Every match played in one week is a single round. If a team plays twice that week, add the two results together and enter one number.
- Byes. With an odd number of teams, the team sitting out scores 0 for that week; a double round-robin evens this out.

Scoring
Standard football scoring rests on three values. If your league uses a different scale, just change the values in the app.
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | 3 |
| Draw | 1 |
| Loss | 0 |
- The old 2-1-0. Some leagues still award 2 for a win; the gap narrows and a draw becomes worth more.
- Goal difference. PointSim does not track goals. On level points the “last round” rule decides — the team with the better final week goes ahead. If you want goal difference to settle it, that call stays with the table.
- Walkovers. Give the absent team 0 and their opponent 3; as far as PointSim is concerned it is an ordinary match.
004
Setting it up in PointSim
Set the scoring method to the W/D/L table. The default 3-1-0 values are editable, so your own league rules work too. Mark each team’s weekly result as W, D or L and the app adds the points — no arithmetic on your side.
Pick “people” as the contestant type and type the team names in — or switch to the country type and run it with flags, a nice touch for groups who like turning the weekly kickabout into a World Cup.
When two teams level out, the “last round” rule decides who sits higher. No elimination across the season; you keep adding weeks and open the podium after the final one.
005
Variations
- Play-offs: finish the regular season, take the top four into a new simulation and switch elimination on per round.
- Cup format: for straight knockout, set a fixed elimination per round; the loser drops off the table every week.
- Individual league: add players instead of teams and score personal performance each week — then the method becomes free number entry, as in the Prediction League setup.
