What is the game?
A prediction league is a long-running game where everyone calls the week’s results in advance and scores for the ones they get right. It does not finish in an evening; it stretches across weeks, and that is exactly what keeps a group engaged with it.
What you predict is entirely up to you. Match results are the most common, but where a series you all watch is heading, who goes out on a talent show, the weather, or when a decision at work will finally land all work just as well. The one rule: picks must be made in advance and written down.
002
Setting the league up
- Fix the questions. Five predictions a week is a good number — fewer and the results bunch up, more and nobody fills it in.
- Set a deadline. Before the first match kicks off or the episode airs. Nothing is accepted after it, or the game loses its point.
- Collect the picks somewhere shared. The group chat is enough; everyone being able to see everyone else’s picks heads off arguments later.
- A missed week is a zero. A player who does not submit scores 0 that week but stays in the league.
003
Scoring
The simplest form is one point per correct pick. If your questions vary a lot in difficulty, weight them like this.
| Prediction type | Correct | Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Simple pick (who wins) | 1 | 0 |
| Exact pick (scoreline / precise outcome) | 3 | 0 |
| Outlier pick (nobody else said the same) | Double | 0 |
| Season pick (made up front, counted at the end) | 5 | 0 |
- Do not use negative points. A prediction league already punishes you; a wrong pick is the lost opportunity itself.
- Collect season picks in week one and add them to the final week’s score — a hidden pot that makes the last round genuinely tense.
- Keep the weekly figure as one number; entering pick by pick clutters the table for nothing.
004
Setting it up in PointSim
Type in the number of correct picks each week with free entry. One number per player (3, 2, 4) and the table updates the standings itself.
For a long-running league just keep adding rounds; no win limit needed. For a short tournament, switch on fixed elimination per round and drop the last place every week — with five players you have a champion in four weeks.
Got a week wrong? Undo the round with one tap. Prediction leagues attract disputes about results, so this one comes up often.

Variations
- Joker week: once a season, a player may declare in advance that this week’s score counts double.
- Team picks: pair players up and add each pair as a single contestant.
- Two halves: reset the table mid-season and run the second half as its own simulation; let the two champions play a final.
- Ranked scoring: to award places rather than counting correct picks, the method becomes the no-repeat point pool from the Song Contest setup.
